Jane Hanson works in stoneware a
nd porcelain. She throws fine functional ceramics, fired to 1300°C in a reduction atmosphere, and also hand builds larger pieces to paint with her palette of richly coloured glazes. She experiments with metal oxides, such as copper, iron and cobalt in various glazes, fascinated with the endless possibilites for colour and creates pots with vibrant colour combinations. The glazes are applied with free bold brush strokes, in layers, which melt together, to produce unusual mixtures on unique pots.
Coming from South Africa, where Jane trained and worked as an industrial designer, she moved to England to study ceramics at the Royal College of Art. Her first studio was in the East End of London, amoungst sculptors and painters. She then moved to the hamlet of Waterstock, in Oxfordshire, where she established her pottery in converted barns. Visitors are always welcome.
Jane has been making pottery and teaching her craft for twenty five years. She has exhibited her work in London, York, Cambridge, Oxford and many other rural towns, in one woman shows and mixed exhibitions.
