Richard Shock retired in 2005 from his job as a professional environmental consultant to concentrate on his developing work as a wood turner. He works mostly with English native hardwoods but uses some imported woods, which often have exciting colours and figures.

The design of the individual pieces is inspired by the wood itself, sometimes enhanced by inlays chosen to complement the grain and colour of the wood. For finishes Richard uses either wax finishes or oils which are suitable for food. In addition to bowls and platters he makes pots, bud vases and candlesticks.
