Rosie was born
to work with felt and silver. Having a clay-spattered craftsman
father, and a tree-cleaving sculptor uncle meant that she was immersed
in the creative use of natural materials throughout her childhood,
and naturally gravitated towards 3D craft as her chosen career.
While completing her education, the enthusiasm for her felt work
was such that she was asked to run impromptu classes to show other
students how it was done. On the strength of her degree show alone
she was offered a teaching job at her former place of study, which
she still holds.
Rosie's individual
style comes from setting the soft textures of felt against the hard
reflective surfaces of the highly polished silver. She exploits
the surprising structural strength and hard-wearing qualities of
felt in a uniquely exuberant fashion, using strong colours and unusual
designs which show her love of West African culture.
She also teaches
sabar (a highly complex form of West African drumming) at her local
Arts centre as well as a two evening classes in jewellery making
and numerous weekend workshops in both jewellery and felt making.
