Most of Martin’s work reflects his love of the British countryside and a desire to craft and carve ‘one off’ tactile sculpture in wood and stone. A parallel interest in the beauty and power of calligraphy led to an increasing focus on letter cutting in slate and other natural materials. Originally working predominantly in native timbers a move to the Cotswolds triggered the drive to achieve a level of understanding and craftsmanship with stone that enables him to celebrate the natural world sculpturing in local limestones. As a member of Oxfordshire’s Craft Guild and Oxford Sculptors’ Group much time is spent on commissioned lettering in wood and stone but Martin’s prime objective is to leave a recognised and valued sculpted mark.
